Even though Halloween has passed, horror movies are still a delight to watch, especially when the lights are low, and thunder booms outside.

When a stranger calls (2006 - PG-13)

This movie starts off with teenage drama: the main character’s boyfriend cheats on her with her best friend. Because of this, she racks up over 800 minutes in phone calls by repeatedly calling her former best friend and ex-boyfriend. Her father, obviously not OK with this, makes her work a night of babysitting at a secluded and luxurious home to pay back the debt. This conflicts with her plans of attending a party, but she obeys her father and goes to babysit.
That’s when the movie gets weird.
The children she is babysitting are already fast asleep when she arrives, and she prepares for an evening of relaxation. However, she starts receiving strange anonymous phone calls in which the caller breathes into the microphone. However, the calls get worse. Soon, the caller becomes threatening, and the movie evolves into a horrifying game of cat and mouse as the caller invades the home and terrifies those inside. When a Stranger Calls, while not a piece of art, is a good scare for Halloween night.

I know what you did last summer (1997 - r)

I Know What You Did Last Summer begins with a group of drunken teenagers going home from a party. One their way home, they accidentally hit a pedestrian. The incident freaks them out, especially after they learn that they’ve killed the pedestrian. After convincing a passer-by that everything is OK, the group ends up dumping the body of the accident victim in a nearby lake. However, the guy that was supposed to be dead woke up and assaulted the shocked teenagers. They manage to kick him into the water where he supposedly drowns.
A year passes and one of the teenagers, Julie, is still pretty shaken up by the murder/hiding of the body. When she returns home from college for the summer, she receives a letter at her house that reads “I know what you did last summer.”
Following this, Julie, and the others (who received similar notes), try and find out who sent them, which leads to nothing but dead bodies, misery and surprising plot twists.

night of the living dead (1968 - ur)

Widely considered to be the mother of all zombie movies, Night of the Living Dead follows the struggle of a group of people in a Western Pennsylvania farmhouse.

In the beginning, a woman finds herself being chased by a seemingly insane/rabid figure. She takes refuge in a nearby house, where she meets Duane, who also decided that the farmhouse would be an apt garrison to defend against the undead hordes. The two soon find out that this is occurring all over the eastern United States, and that they are in the midst of a zombie apocalypse. They discover there is a family hiding in the basement, and that a pair of teenagers who had crashed nearby wish to stay in the home as well.

From here, the movie gets extremely heart-wrenching with gore and seemingly unwarranted deaths of certain characters.

It’s a great movie, a classic at that, and has been so important to the filming industry, the Library of Congress included it in its National Film Registry.

The sixth sense (1999 - pg-13)

In this movie, Cole Sear is the child of a single mother in Philadelphia. Cole, however, has an issue: he can see dead people. So, Dr. Malcolm Crowe, a revered child psychologist, takes up the task of helping Cole with his issue. Throughout the movie, Malcolm struggles to help Cole with his problem, as Cole is perpetually haunted by the presence of the dead, including a boy who killed himself in Cole’s home, and a girl who died of cancer in a nearby neighborhood.
The movie has some incredible acting from both Bruce Willis (Malcolm) and Haley Joel Osment (Cole) and the story is exhilarating from start to finish, especially with the surprising twist at the movie’s conclusion.

shaun of the dead (2004 - r)

Shaun of the Dead is a welcome reprieve from the shock and gore the rest of this list provides. The story focuses on a 30-something wash-up named Shaun and his best friend Ed (along with a few other acquaintances) as they confront the zombie hordes in London.
The movie contains some hilarious moments, including a scene where Shaun, his girlfriend, and Ed relentlessly beat a zombie with pool cues to the tune of Don’t Stop Me Now by Queen, and a scene where Shaun and the others pretend to act like zombies to deflect an attack, and Ed ruins it by responding to a call on his cell phone.
